The PDX Landscape Master Plan design team developed a comprehensive vision to unify and elevate the airport’s 3,000-acre landscape experience. The plan establishes clear design guidelines and typologies that reflect the region’s diverse ecology, transitioning from open, wild landscapes at the I-205 approach to more structured, crafted spaces at the terminal core.

Through extensive stakeholder engagement and detailed site analysis, the plan balances aviation safety, ecological function, and regional identity. It introduces cohesive landscape standards, celebrates Pacific Northwest vernacular, and supports future development with adaptable strategies for phased implementation. The resulting framework enhances arrival experiences while preserving safety and operational goals.

As a Senior Landscape Architect with Mayer/Reed, Tim Strand was project manager and design lead for this project.
