The Cascade Avenue Streetscape Improvements transformed Sisters’ central corridor — also known as US 20 — into a safer, more walkable, and visually distinctive downtown experience. Balancing the needs of a regional freight route with those of a pedestrian-friendly main street, the project addressed longstanding safety concerns while celebrating the town’s unique identity.

Natural materials like wood, stone, and forged metal reflect Sisters’ modern western character, while clustered street trees, wildflower planters, and green infrastructure bring ecological function and beauty to the corridor. Extensive community engagement shaped the final design, which includes paver sidewalks, ADA upgrades, bio-swales, pedestrian lighting, and custom furnishings, supporting local businesses, enhancing livability, and reinforcing Sisters’ place as a gateway to the Cascades.

As an Associate with GreenWorks, Tim Strand was project manager and design lead for this project.
